Walks for Water

starting a 3 kilometre walk for water

Walk for Water is a series of charity walks, raising cash for boreholes in Malawi. It is a fund-raising campaign based on a simple association of ideas and experiences in the UK and Malawi:
o We celebrate our heritage in having a plentiful, clean water supply in the UK by walking routes designed around water features such as reservoirs;
o We visit and enjoy areas of outstanding natural beauty in the UK;
o We raise cash for PAW to invest in developing a plentiful, clean water supply in Mwabvi;
o A water supply will enable Mwabvi communities to create a sustainable future and preserve an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Water is a major problem for the people. Despite the fact that 20% of their country is lake, and that Mwabvi is only 5km from the Shire, one of the largest rivers in Africa, nevertheless Lester at the scout camp water pumpclean drinking water is in short supply in the dry season - finding water and sinking a bore-hole is an expensive undertaking. PAW is working with local communities and National Parks staff and is looking to build a number of essential water points around the Reserve, for both animals and residents. In the short term these water holes will provide much needed supplies of freshwater and as a longer-term benefit can form the basis for irrigation schemes to surrounding farmland, a key component in averting famine in the future.

By the end of 2008 we had held 8 small and friendly walks in the Midlands and north of England.

What we have achieved

At the end of 2007 our walkers for water had walked 516 miles and raised over £1500. That's enough to survey and drill another borehole.

The 2008 total is being calculated and is likely to match this! That's enough to pay for another electric pump and pipework to the camp site at Migudu!

Look out for a small and friendly walk early in 2009.

And a Major friendly walk is being planned for September 2009!
