Hand-knitted jumpers for the Mwabvi children
The ladies of Lincolnshire have been very busy recently - knitting. Judith Withyman, district councillor for Pinchbeck, and her friends have knitted over 300 jumpers and distributed them to charities working with children in Africa. When Judith (seen here with PAW. volunteer Kate Mitchell) heard about the work of Project African Wilderness, she was very excited to hear that we could take the jumpers directly to the community and distribute them personally to children in need. The ladies who were doing the knitting were delighted to be able to see the direct impact of their hard work and we are grateful for their valuable support. They are now knitting teddies (such as those seen in the picture) and other items for the children and we hope to visit Pinchbeck later in the year to meet the ladies, tell them about the community programme in Mwabvi, and show them photos of the children receiving the jumpers.
Adele Kerr, who runs a wound care programme and an orphan centre at Mwabvi, says that there is always a need for jumpers in the winter, including larger sizes for the small children; as well as blankets for newborn babies, and of course teddies are always a great success, as the families have no money for toys themselves.
Gaynor will be visiting Mwabvi in February and will be taking the jumpers to give to the children of the villages around the reserve, so watch this space for pictures of the children's happy faces when they receive their slightly delayed Christmas jumpers.
