A new 4x4 truck for Mwabvi
Following the fire at Mwabvi which destroyed one of our Land Rovers, finding a new 4x4 vehicle for transport within the reserve has been a top priority - and now we've found one.
MAN, the German vehicle manufacturer who supply the British army have come up trumps, with an ex-demo four ton people carrier in immaculate condition and for a real charity price. The truck was originally provided by MAN in Germany as a demo model and although it is ten years old it only has 27,000Km on the clock and is in pristine condition.
Gaynor, Malcolm and Dave went down to the army base at Tewkesbury to "kick the tyres" and give it a test drive. Mark Forsythe of MAN UK showed them round, and was really interested in the work that PAW is doing - so much so that he's thrown in a couple of spare tyres and will even arrange to have it driven to the seaport of our choice when it's ready to be sent off to MWCT in Malawi.
The great thing about getting an MAN truck is that MAN have a service and spares depot in Blantyre, which will really save on the costs of maintaining the vehicle in Malawi.
Once the paperwork is sorted out and the cheque handed over, the plan is to ship the truck to South Africa, where Barry will pick it up and drive it up to Malawi.
So an absolutely massive thank you to the MAN Truck and Bus Company - we hope that this will be the start of a long and happy relationship.
